Dear Daughters,

Most parents tell their children, "you can be anything you want when you grow up." I feel the same and I say this often. But I also want you to understand that the dream itself comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing.

Girls, here are some words of wisdom as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur(企业家)and from your mama.

1. Be open-minded to changing your path (even several times) along the way

In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington, DC.There I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I'm creative, a strong leader, and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national healthcare nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag(储奶袋)business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own.

Figure out what you are good at and what you are passionate about. Keep an open mind, the initial(最初的) path you choose may lead you into other areas.

Don't waste your money or time, but constantly change what you are doing professionally based on what you are learning about yourself.

2. Failure is critical to your success

I won't tell you to feel good about failure. Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I've had along the way has absolutely made me better.

Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I've never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time.

Being passed over for a significant job opportunity that I was more than qualified for because of unfair assumptions (being too young for the role) hurt me. I had a three-month pity party. And then I went out and got a big job at a national organization at age 27. It's okay to get angry! Take that and turn it into positive action.

I'm proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want and you can have everything on your list. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes.

Love,

Your Mom

When you want to throw something out as “junk”, better take a second thought as it may be of great value. In fact, scientists made the same mistake with DNA years ago, and now they are trying to get it right.

We often say that DNA is a kind of acid that contains our genes. But the truth is that genes only make up 1 to 2 percent of our DNA, which caused scientists to believe that the rest of it is useless.

Nevertheless, instead of doing nothing, junk DNA, as it is called, turned out to be playing an important part in our body. If genes are like light bulbs, then junk DNA acts as switches.

They control which genes are used in a cell and how active they are. For example, they can determine whether a cell become a lung cell or a neuron(神经元).

The study, published in the journal Nature on September 5, started in 2003, and 442 scientists from 30 labs around the world were involved, according to Reuters. It is considered the biggest breakthrough in genomics(基因学)in a decade because it might help scientist find the cause of certain diseases.

It has long been known that many complicated diseases, such as cancer, are caused by tiny changes in DNA. But now scientists realize that most of the changes occur not in the genes themselves, but in the “junk” part of the DNA. They are able to keep track of how and why the switches change and then figure out new treatments and drugs.

“Our former understanding of DNA was like getting a picture of Earth from space,” Eric Lander from the Broad Institute, US, told The New York Times “You know the planet is there, but you cannot see exactly what it’s like on the surface.”

But now with the new study results “you can follow the roads and see the traffic circulation. That’s exactly the same way we will use this in cancer research,” explained Mark Rubin from weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

41. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. DNA -The Cause of Cancer

B. What Is DNA?

C. A New Discovery for “Junk DNA”

D. A Misunderstanding of Genes

42. What does the underlined phrase “get it right” in the first paragraph refer to?

A. Discovering new types of DNA.

B. Recognizing the importance of junk DNA.

C. Understanding the role genes play in DNA.

D. Telling useful DNA from useless one.

43. The author explains how different parts of DNA work by.

a. introducing a general theory

b. making a metaphor(比喻)

c. giving examples

d. displaying research data

A. b cB. a cC. a dD. c d

44. The results of the study mentioned in the article show that.

A. cancer is caused by tiny changes in genes themselves

B. the study of junk DNA is less important than the study of genes

C. changes in junk DNA do not affect genes

D. junk DNA is very important for the functioning of our calls

45. Which of the following statements might Mark Rubin agree with?

A. The finding of our genes is enough to fight against cancer.

B. The battle against cancer will be won within two years.

C. The finding of junk DNA throws light on how we might cure cancer.

D. The new treatments and drugs will change junk DNA quickly.

How did one man prove that small kindnesses add up?

My family first met Wally Urtz, the gentle, modest manager of our local supermarket, on a windy day nearly 20 years ago just after we’d moved to Hasting-on-Hudson, a New York City suburb. As my wife made her way to the store’s exit, attending her groceries and two small children, Wally rushed up beside her. “I’ll get those, young lady,” he said brightly, taking her bags and leading her to the parking lot. Now that may seem like no big deal-except that these days things like that so seldom happen.

Our story, as it turned out, was typical. Among Hasting ’s 8,000 people living here, almost everybody had at least one about Wally ’s politeness and generosity. There were the times he’d reach into his own pocket when someone was short of money; the times hed show small kindnesses to someone whod just lost a loved one or who was in the middle of divorce; the many, many times he’d put himself out for older people.

“He just appreciated that when people get older, their lives get smaller-they don’t drive, their friends have passed on-and how much it means to be treated warmly,” one woman, Kathy Dragan said, “When my mother was in her 80s,it was a treat for her to go to the store.”Wally would call out to the shop clerk and say, “You give her whatever attention she needs.” She’d tell me, “He’s kinder to me than some people I’ve known all my life.”

Yet few of us fully understood what Wally meant to the people’s life of our community-until he was sent to another store 20 miles away. For some unknown reason, the Food Emporium chain had decided to replace 67-year-old Wally after 26 years due to “operational issues related to operating a store the size of the one in Hastings.”

No one could believe it. Word spread quickly. Neighbors called each other seeking the feeling of emotional comfort. Some planned to bring Wally back and staged protest marches outside the store. Other flooded the local newspaper with angry letters. The mayor took up the cause. Even the police tried to set things right.

A grocer seems an unlikely figure to set off such an emotional outpouring(流露). What he did shows the remarkable effect Wally-a man of endless warmth and good humor-had on people.

46. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Wally Urtz is always ready to help others every day.

B. Wally Urtz is a man who wants to draw attention to him.

C. Wally Urtz helped the author’s wife on purpose.

D. The author had known Wally Urtz before we moved to Hastings-on-Hudson.

47. The purpose of Kathy Dragan’s words in paragraph 4 is to show.

A. in the whole life of Kathy Dragan’s mother, Wally is the kindest person to her

B. when people get older, they would like to live by themselves

C. Wally had always cared about helping the older people

D. you should give your old mother whatever attention she needs

48. What’s people’s reaction to Wally Urtz’s being moved away?

A. No one paid much attention to it.

B. Many people objected to it in different ways.

C. The police supported it will all their heart.

D. The mayor thought it was a good idea.

49. It can be inferred from the passage that.

A. A person in the grocery can easily express his felling out to others.

B. A person full of warm- heartedness and humor has a great influence on people.

C. The mayor didn’t look into the reason of people’s emotional outpouring.

D. The author had joined in the plan of bringing Wally back.

50. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

A. Wally Urtz and Old people

B. A Food Shopping Grocer

C. Wally Urtz’s Being Moved Away

D. The Heart of Town-a Man of Endless Warmth

D

Air pollution is getting more and more serious in many places around the world. The fact that public parks in cities become crowded proves that people long to breathe in green, open spaces. And, in these surroundings, they are generally both peaceful and peaceable. It is rare to see people being at odds or even fighting in a garden. It seems to be proved that if human beings can freely breathe and share air, there is no primary reason for them to struggle with one another.

But do we only sense what life could be when we enjoy green spaces?

The plant would silently shows us what a reflection of life truthfully is. It also helps us to a new beginning urging us to care for our breath. We must, in turn, care for it, opposing any sort of pollution that destroys both our world and that of plans. The interdependence to which we must pay the closest attention is what exists between ourselves and the plant world. Often described as “the lungs of the planet”, the woods that cover the earth offer us the gift of breathable air by releasing oxygen .But their capacity to renew the air polluted by industry has long reached its limit. If we continue to pollute the air by filling it with chemicals and destroy the ability of plans to restore it we will soon pull our world into an unavoidable disaster.

Humans must learn to share life, both with each other and with plans. This task can be carried out only when each tasks it upon her-or himself-and only when all work together. The lesson taught by plants is that human life can only exist with nature. We must come to view the air, the plants and ourselves as the countries to the protection of life and growth, rather than productive objects we can use and throw away freely. Perhaps then we would finally begin to live, rather than merely survive.

51. What does the underlined part “being at odds” mean?

A. relaxingB. exercisingC. conflictingD. hurrying

52. According to the first paragraph, what does the author suppose might be the primary reason that people would struggle with each other?

A. To get their share of clean air.B. To purpose a comfortable life.

C. To gain a higher social status.D. To seek economic benefits.

53. What does the author try to draw our closest attention to?

A. The massive burning of fossil fuels.

B. Our relationship to the plant world.

C. The capacity of plans to renew polluted air.

D. Large-scale deforestation across the world.

54. How can human beings achieve the goal of protecting the planet, according to the author?

A. By showing respect for plants.B. By preserving all forms of life.

C. By consuming all natural resources.D. By all making their efforts together.

55. What does the author suggest we do in order to not just survive, but lives better?

A. Expand the range of living.B. Developing nature’s potentials.

C. Share life with nature.D. Explore new resources.

When people think of New York City, most of them probably picture the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.

I had always known that poverty existed in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money.

Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them.

Every person we met on that trip had a unique story. Whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them — hope and thanks. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their futures and they were thanking us.

My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house and a lot of money, but now I see my future as helping others. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.

Dear John,

I'm writing in response to your inquiry about “mobike” mentioned in your email. As is known by you, nowadays, the phenomenon that people are sharing bike is becoming increasingly popular. The reasons are as follows:

First of all, it is very convenient to use a mobike if you have a smart phone. What you need to do is find a nearest mobike through the APP, scan the QR Code on it, and enjoy your trip. Secondly, you can easily find one and there is no need to worry about where to park it. Thirdly, sharing bike is a good way to work out, which is beneficial to us both physically and mentally. Last but not least, it is becoming a new trend as a means of transport, which relieves the traffic pressure and does good to our environment as well.

Hope to ride a mobike with you in Tianjin.

Yours,

Li Jin
